International students coming from European Union countries are officially allowed to hold a job in the Netherlands without obtaining a work permit. Students from non-EU countries are either allowed to work for ten hours a week throughout the year or they may save up these work hours in order to take a seasonal job in June, July and/or August. They are required to obtain a work permit before starting their job. For information about work permits please contact the Office of Foreign Relations at the Universiteit van Amsterdam.
Financial support
ACTA does not offer financial support (nor do either of Amsterdam’s universities) except in the case of PhD studies. Academic departments, professional affiliations or research institutes in your own country may be willing to support you in financing your studies at ACTA. American and Canadian students are entitled to apply for a Guaranteed Student Loan (GSL) or for a deferment of payment on an existing GSL account.
Language
Programmes are conducted in English, unless stated otherwise. Non-native speakers are required to submit proof of proficiency in the English language before enrolling. They should be able to read text books, understand lectures, take part in class discussions, give oral presentations and write papers in English. A good indicator of competence is a score of 550 or higher on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or a minimum score of 6.5 on the test of the English Language Testing Service (ELTS).
