Periodontology
Aim
The aim of this European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) accredited programme is to train postgraduate students on a specialist level in periodontology in particular and implant dentistry. This is done through a programme of seminars and tutorials, which include an extensive review of the literature. Furthermore, considerable time is allocated to the treatment of patients suffering from specific periodontal diseases who are referred by their general practitioners. Extensive training in research within the broad field of periodontology (or implant dentistry) is also part of the programme. The results of the research project conducted must be presented in the form of a written report or publication (thesis). The programme includes a mandatory period in an accredited private periodontal practice, which enables the students to put theory into practice.
Organising department and faculty
The programme is organised by the department of Periodontology and is chaired by Prof. dr. Ubele van der Velden and Prof. dr. Bruno Loos. Professor Van der Velden received a PhD from the Universiteit van Amsterdam in 1981 and has authored numerous scientific articles on clinical periodontology. Professor Loos obtained an MSc in periodontology from the Loma Linda University, USA in 1985. In 1992 he received a PhD in oral biology from the State University of New York at Buffalo, USA. The department of Periodontology participates in undergraduate teaching, performs patient treatment in its own departmental clinic, frequently provides short postgraduate courses and enjoys a strong reputation in basic and clinical research.
